Iced Shaken Espresso Recipe
That smooth, frothy, cafe-style iced shaken espresso is easier to make at home than you think - and a whole lot cheaper. With bold espresso, a touch of brown sugar, and a splash of milk over ice, you can shake up a refreshing pick-me-up in just minutes.
Shaking the espresso with ice is the secret: it chills the coffee fast and creates a light, airy foam on top that makes the drink feel special.
Required Ingredients
- 2 shots of espresso (or 1/3 cup strong brewed coffee)
- 1-2 tablespoons brown sugar syrup (or brown sugar dissolved in a splash of hot water)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Ice cubes
- A splash of milk or oat milk to top
Instructions
1. Brew the Espresso
Pull two shots of espresso, or brew a small amount of very strong coffee. Let it cool for a minute.
2. Sweeten It
Stir the brown sugar syrup (and vanilla, if using) into the warm espresso so it dissolves fully.
3. Shake With Ice
Add the sweetened espresso and a handful of ice to a cocktail shaker or lidded jar. Shake hard for 15-20 seconds until frothy and well chilled.
4. Pour Over Fresh Ice
Fill a glass with fresh ice and pour the shaken espresso over the top, foam and all.
5. Top With Milk
Finish with a splash of milk or oat milk. Give it a gentle stir and enjoy.
Tips
- Make a batch of brown sugar syrup ahead - equal parts brown sugar and water, simmered until dissolved - and keep it in the fridge.
- For a stronger drink, use three shots of espresso and less ice.
- Oat milk gives an especially creamy, cafe-like finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
No espresso machine - what can I use?
A stovetop moka pot, an Aeropress, or simply very strong brewed coffee all work well as a base. For more on brewing methods, see the National Coffee Association's brewing guide.
Can I make it less sweet?
Of course - start with a teaspoon of syrup and adjust to taste.
